Jaipur Blue Pottery
Jaipur blue pottery is unusual: there is no clay in it. The body is quartz-based, which is why the pieces are lighter than they look and why the blue reads so clean under glaze.
-
The material
A quartz-based dough, not clay — mixed with fuller's earth, gum and glass.
-
Shaping
Pressed into molds and shaped by hand, then left to dry slowly.
-
Smoothing
The surface is rubbed down and coated so it takes paint cleanly.
-
Hand painting
Motifs are drawn freehand with oxide pigment and a fine brush.
-
Glazing & firing
Dipped in glaze and fired once at low temperature.
-
Finishing
Each piece is checked by hand. Small variations are left as they are.
